Landscape photography isn’t really my thing. I have never managed to evoke the emotion I feel for special places in a photograph, although I have admired the ability in others hugely. My problem is that I don’t know how to plan for the task.
As instructed, at 7.30pm, I joined the rest of the group, all in walking boots, and we headed down the steep slope to the beach. We followed the fossil filled cliff southwards crossing the black slippery slabs like old goats and safely reached the photographers pitch.
I felt I had joined a special group of people who took photography seriously and felt I should be able to learn a trick or two. If you watch skilled people carefully you can learn little bits and pieces. If those people are prepared to talk you through their actions you can learn lots. Richard did just that, explaining his choices and decisions. Technical manuals make me yawn, I think it may be a gender issue, but seeing and touching makes sense to me. Seeing how graduation filters work, not only to balance the light but also to cut the light so that a long exposure can be chosen was so useful. I didn’t know how clever my camera is. I use the old method of focusing and taking a reading whilst half de-pressing the shutter and then adjusting the composition but Richard showed me how to use the steerable focus points.
There was a bit of good humoured jostling for the tripod holes but everyone shared information and helped out where they could. I didn’t just learn from Richard!
Having moved around and taken photos, and taken them again as the light improved it clouded over and started to get a bit chilly. Left to my own devices I would have gone home but thankfully I was told it is best to stay until the sun goes right down as you don’t want to see a beautiful sunset in your rear view mirror. Good advice, the sky turned a deep pink with clashing red streaks and I am sure lots of the members got some great shots, and I got better ones than I usually do. Bowing to the suns passage is an essential habit I must practice.
I realize now that something has rubbed off as I wish I had taken my camera when I walked the dogs up to the scarp of the Wolds this evening at sunset.
